At present, in England and Wales there is no statutory age limit for ear or cosmetic piercing. However, some London Boroughs have used licensing powers to impose license conditions relating to the age of the client.
Some Boroughs do not allow body piercing below the age of 18 years, with the exception of ears, nose and navel. Some impose no age restrictions at all, while others allow only ‘above the belt’ piercing between the ages of 16 and 18 years and require either proof of ID or an adult’s consent for this age range. Others will only carry out piercings of under 16 year olds with a parent or guardian present.
Under English law, young people under the age of 16 years cannot have their genitalia pierced (this includes female breasts) as this is regarded as indecent assault to which the customer cannot legally consent. Before carrying out a piercing, most piercers will request that the client signs a consent form. Reputable body piercers should adopt reasonable age restrictions.
HYGIENIC BODY PIERCING
As professional piercers, we only use the best quality
equipment and jewellery for body piercing. 316L surgical steel is now illegal for initial piercings, due to a higher nickel content which does not conform to the new EU nickel sensitization law (EU Directive
94/27/EC). It may be used in healed piercings. Instead
we use medical grade titanium Ti 6ALAV (used since 1950 for medical implants), P.T.F.E. and titanium nitride coated over titanium (as used in hospitals to coat pacemakers and orthopedic implants etc). All
metals conform to the new EU metal directive.
Each piece of jewellery is individually sterilized prior
to piercing. A new needle is used every time. All equipement i.e. clamps etc. are also individually sterilized.
You must be over 16, with valid photo ID for body piercing, unless accompanied by a parent or legal gardian.
For tongue piercing you must be 16/17 with parental consent or 18 with valid photo ID.
